What the Radio Banana daily signal measures and how it is calculated. The same rules apply every day.

What is measured

  • The farm-gate price of the 22XU banana box in Ecuador, in USD per box, recorded or negotiated on the last market day.
  • Published Monday to Friday. On Mondays it shows the price of the last market day, with its date written out.

Collection

  • Prices come from a panel of industry sources, with consent and for one limited purpose: the aggregate calculation.
  • Each source has a pseudonym. The company name is not stored with the price and is never published.
  • Collection closes at 22:00 Ecuador time on the eve of publication. Anything received later does not count.
  • Only prices verified by the market research team count.

Outliers

  • A price more than 20% away from the median of the day is flagged as pending confirmation and does not count until it is confirmed.

Status of each day

  • Sources are counted as distinct sources, not as messages.
  • Normal: at least 5 prices from at least 3 sources. The median and the P25-P75 range are published, rounded to 0.05.
  • Limited data: 3 or 4 prices from at least 3 sources. Only the median is published, rounded to 0.10.
  • Insufficient data: fewer than 3 sources. No new number, only the last published figure with its date.

What we do not do

  • We never publish the minimum or the maximum of the prices received.
  • We do not fill in days without data: there is no interpolation. P25 and P75 are observed values.

Comparison with the official price

  • The published median is compared with the official price set by Ecuador's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock: USD 7.50 per box in 2026.
  • If the median falls below it, the publication says so with a fixed note.

Publication and corrections

  • A person reviews and approves every publication. Without approval nothing goes out, and that day we state that there is no signal.
  • If there is an error, a correction is published on the same channels and stays visible in the archive. The original text is not deleted.
  • Every calculation is kept in a log that cannot be changed.
